September 14,
2002 - Scrimmage vs. Bryant College
After field conflicts
at the Anchormen's home, the scrimmage moved to Bryant for a controlled,
instructional meeting. The first part of the scrimmage included reviews of
lineouts, then into scrumdowns. After about 20 minutes of instructional
play, both sides engages into a full scrimmage with 20 minute halves.
Rust and inexperience
reared its head in the beginning of the contest as expected, but solid
tackling overall helped maintain the Bulldog's defense well into the first
half of play. Bryant did dominate in offensive possession, but did not
capitalize on the majority of the chances they did have. Both teams did
show their green as rookies did not have the experience to make plays when
openings presented themselves, but veterans were quick to instruct and
correct their play.
Highlights of the day
include Pedro's solid tackling display. Ryan's consistent running and
scoring run. Nick Francis's communication improved as well as the team
overall. Overall surprise of the day was from a rookie playing his first
game. Since he is a rookie and yet to play a legitimate game, his name will
not be on my page until he is proven.
An area that always
lacks attention is the scrum. This weekend showed that even if outweighed,
they can still drive a team back.
The true test comes
this weekend as Western Connecticut visits RIC in the season opener.
